Established in 1960, the National Defence College (NDC) is a premier training institution of the Ministry of Defence.  The College conducts a one-year course for senior officers of the rank of Brigadier and equivalent from Indian and Foreign Forces and Joint Secretary/Director level officers from the Indian Civil Services.   The NDC is the highest seat of learning of National Security issues for officers of the Indian Armed Forces/Civil Services.

One hundred  officers including twenty five from abroad normally attend the course at the NDC.   Over the years, the NDC has come to be recognized as a center of excellence for Strategic Studies.   It enjoys a high international reputation as is evident from the large number of officers from friendly foreign countries attending the course.   The College is also frequently visited by foreign delegations and by similar institutions in other countries.
